Last Friday the Mile High City was on cloud nine and not because of the upcoming 4/20 celebrations statewide. No, fans were elated over wins from the Colorado Avalanche, the Colorado Rockies, and the Denver Nuggets.
On Friday, the Colorado Avalanche traveled to Calgary to face the Flames in game five. The Avalanche who found out they locked up the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference in just the first week of April, were on the verge of dethroning the top seeded Pacific Division Flames. Colorado lost game one of the series but after Friday nights win in Calgary the Avalanche accomplished the unaccomplishable, beating the Calgary Flames by winning four straight games after losing game one in the series.
The Avalanche now patiently await the winner of the San Jose Sharks, and Las Vegas Knights series which is now tied 3-3 with the remaining game to be played in San Jose Tuesday night.
While the Avalanche are getting a chance to rest players, Mile High fans enjoyed a follow-up walk-off homerun win delivered by none other than outfielder Charlie (a.k.a. Chuck Nazty) Blackmon over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. While the Rockies have been in an early slump dropping 11 of their first 17 games, they seemed to have turned the tides beginning with their series against the Phillies. Since last Thursday the Rockies have won 3 of 4 games. The Rockies host the Washington Nationals this week in a three-game series that began on Monday.
While fans celebrated wins from the Avalanche and the Rockies on Friday the Denver Nuggets added to fan elations by beating the San Antonio Spurs in San Antonio to tie up the series with two wins apiece. The Nuggets return home this week to host the Spurs at Pepsi Center on Tuesday night.
While fans have been fortunate to celebrate all the home team wins over the weekend they are also gearing up for the 2019 NFL draft which begins on Thursday this week. It’s still anyone’s guess as to how the Denver Broncos will approach this year’s draft and many believe that the Broncos are poised to draft the future quarterback of the organization. Fans only have a couple days to wait and see.
In other sports the Colorado Rapids lost 4-1 to the Chicago Fire SC at Toyota Park in Chicago Saturday afternoon. The Rapids are still on the road this weekend when they travel to Atlanta to face the Atlanta Wild at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
