STEM program offered in an all-girl environment held at Metropolitan State University of Denver
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver (GIMD) launched its comprehensive STEM program called Eureka! at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) on June 3, 2019. The program is in its fourth year of a five-year program and has enrolled 120 girls that will continue through high school graduation.
In addition to MSU Denver, major partners include Xcel Energy, Comcast, Leprino Foods, I.A. O’Shaughnessy Foundation, United Airlines, Motorola Solutions Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Ball Corporation, Merchant & Gould, Arrow Electronics, Subaru Foundation, and NREL.
“Eureka! is one of the most comprehensive out-of-school STEM programs for girls that exists today. Not only does the program provides girls with the resources and mentorship they need to explore and pursue STEM career fields, it also encourages girls to be leaders, maintain their health, and prepare for college. Many of the participants will be the first person in their families to attend college. They believe that Eureka! will lead to lasting change for themselves and the generations that follow. We know that this program has the capacity to do just that,” remarked Sonya Ulibarri, President & CEO of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver.
The Eureka! program is geared toward middle and high schools girls who are excited about science, math, engineering and technology. During the four week summer program at MSU Denver, 1st and 2nd year Eureka! participants, or Eurekans, gain leadership skills, participate in weekly field trips, interact with STEM professionals and learn on a college campus. There are daily hands-on activities that explore topics in mechanical engineering, renewable energy, computer science, food systems, architecture/planning, biomedical engineering, and aerospace. Third and fourth year participants complete a job readiness program that leads to a placement in paid summer STEM internships with local companies and organizations.
The five-year Eureka! program consists of: two summers of STEM coursework, two STEM-focused paid summer internships, and an opportunity to travel nationally and globally with GIMD before their senior year of high school. In addition to summer activities, Eurekans participate in monthly activities during the school year and are eligible for college scholarships through local and the national Girls Inc. organization.
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver will celebrate the accomplishments of the Eureka! participants at the annual Eureka! Celebration taking place Thursday, June 26 at 6pm at the Tivoli Turnhalle on the Auraria Campus. Attendees will include program participants, families, and corporate and foundation partners.
