The coffee pot starts brewing at 2 a.m. in Greg Jackson’s home. This ensures making enough time, and caffeine, to fuel a packed day of delivering students to school, managing logistics of a fleet of hundreds of school buses, and collaborating with a team of loyal, passionate employees that all ensure Jeffco students make it to school to engage in meaningful learning.
On the go, running through daily tasks, with never losing focus on the employee or student experience - Executive Director of Transportation and Fleet Services Greg Jackson has just been named as the 2019 Director of the Year from School Transportation News.
Jackson tackles his life and career with vigor and enjoyment. It’s obvious that his experience in collaboration, teamwork and fun are the mile markers for his successful career and department. Jeffco transports about 19,000 students a day through 773 square miles of Jefferson County in 415 buses over 4.5M miles per year. Managing a team of hundreds of bus drivers, assistants, supervisors, maintenance staff, mechanics, and office support staff through every day transportation issues or big ones like driver and mechanic shortages, winter weather conditions and even terrain challenges, is no easy task, but spend a day in Jackson’s office, and you will find that his humor, warmth, and collaborative approach make the work feel breezy.
Jackson’s leadership style is to support his employees and give them every resource that they need for success. He knows that relationships are what get the job done. “My passion comes from seeing my folks happy,” Jackson said. “What’s the next new thing I can do to give you guys something?”.
Jackson is clearly motivated by helping people and building relationships. “[School transportation] is about the people, the kiddos. It’s about making sure you are providing a service to the students in which they can have success... It’s about making a difference every day in getting the kids to and from school,” Jackson explains.
