Ethiopian woman named Hero of the Year - Freweini Mebrahtu has been named Hero of the Year from the media channel CNN for designing reusable sanitary pads. She designed and patented the pad in 2005 and since then, over 700,00 pads have been created.
Cyclone hits Madagascar - Around 85 percent of the Soalala district in Madagascar is flooded as Tropical Cyclone Belna has hit the area. Parts of the district have already been damaged, including homes and government buildings. Nobody has been killed from the cyclone, but in Somalia, another cyclone killed at least two people.
New Zealand volcano kills five - The White Island volcano in New Zealand erupted, and killed at least five people. There are at least eight others missing while 31 people are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. It is believed that three of the five deceased are from Australia as a ship carrying 24 Australians was near the area where the volcano erupted.
Arrest made in stolen baby - In Pakistan, a paramedic is accused of stealing a baby to give to her aunt who does not have a child. The baby was stolen after being born in a Balochistan hospital. The family of the baby was unaware she was missing, because they had twins, but were unaware they gave birth to twins. The paramedic was arrested while on duty at a delivery room.
Ukraine/Russia reach agreement - Ukraine and Russia have agreed to create a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine by the time the year is over. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Paris on Monday. Ukraine government forces and rebels backed by Russia have fought for over five years, and more than 13,000 people have died.
Sanna Marin becomes youngest prime minister - Sanna Marin has become the youngest prime minister as she was chosen for her position in Finland. She was picked by the Social Democratic Party after former Prime Minister Antti Rinne left her position. Marin is only 34 and has been Transport and Communications Minister since June.
Latin music has successful year - In areas outside the United Kingdom, Latin music took storm in 2019, according to YouTube’s top five music videos. Number one was Daddy Yankee’s Con Calma. This year marks the third year in a row that a Latin song was number one on YouTube’s global chart. Revenues in the Latin America music market increased by 16.8 percent last year.
World War I one ship found - In the Falkland Islands, an armored cruiser that belonged to Germany in World War I was discovered. It was sunk in the area by the British Navy around 105 years ago, and it had over 800 men on board at the time. The search for the ship started five years ago when the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Falkland Islands took place.
Trump stops play to designate drug cartels as terrorists - President Donald Trump had promised to label Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups after nine American citizens were killed in Mexico last month. Now, the president is backing out on his promise. His plans are on hold due to the request of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
No political bias from FBI - According to a report from the U.S. Department of Justice Inspector General, there is no evidence of political bias when an inquiry was launched into the 2016 Trump campaign. The report found that the FBI had authorized purpose to carry out the investigation.
