Denver Health provides vaccines to 1,000 DPS educators

More than 1,000 Denver Public Schools (DPS) educators received a vaccine at Denver Health on Saturday during a mass vaccination clinic after state guidelines recently authorized the next phase of vaccinations. Eligible individuals include frontline essential workers such as teachers, other school-based staff and child care workers, as well as those 65-69 years old.

“I am incredibly relieved,” said Ambria Reed, a teacher at McGlone Academy who is immunocompromised. “I feel very much like I’m getting a part of my life back.” Denver Public Schools and Denver Health have long been partners in the community. Denver Health operates several School Based Health Clinics within district schools to provide no-cost healthcare to DPS students. Denver Health has also provided free COVID-19 testing to students who are showing symptoms, allowing DPS to quickly track cases as they arise, quarantine individuals and limit the potential spread of the virus.

“Today’s effort to vaccinate DPS members against COVID-19 will go a long way to helping families and parents of school-aged children feel safe with in-person learning. Additionally, we know this effort makes a huge dent in getting our educators closer to the classroom. We applaud the tremendous efforts of our educators and their support staff throughout the pandemic, including taking this step to get vaccinated. Denver Health is proud to be a part of the effort to protect our teachers and students,” said Dr. Steve Federico, Director General Pediatrics and School & Community Programs, Denver Health.

Denver Public Schools is offering vaccinations to staff based on a priority list of schools, beginning with the highest percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced price lunch. The district’s goal is to offer vaccinations to any employee who wants one by Spring Break.

Colorado Governor

Governor Polis and Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera visited COVID-19 vaccination clinics in Adams County, El Paso County, Denver, and Lafayette today. The Polis administration is partnering with providers and local communities to ensure the COVID-19 vaccine is equitably and efficiently administered. Governor Polis was in Colorado Springs visiting a mass COVID vaccine clinic the state is operating in partnership with the community and UCHealth Memorial. Gov. Polis was joined by Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers and greeted excited seniors as they joined over 2,000 others in getting vaccinated.

Denver Mayor*

The City and County of Denver is partnering with Denver Health to open four community vaccination sites. These sites will provide vaccines to eligible residents in communities most impacted by COVID-19, where vaccine access has been limited, to help address critical place-based needs.

The first of these community vaccination sites will open in Montbello on Feb. 18. Additional locations in Northeast, West and Southwest Denver will open in the coming weeks.
