The Colorado Avalanche (Avs) have lost two straight games at home to the Anaheim Ducks last Friday (2-3) and again on Monday night to the Phoenix Coyotes at Pepsi Center (2-3).

The Avs close up a two-game series with the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday (game had not been played at the time of this writing) at Pepsi Center at 7 p.m. The Avs were hoping to gain ground in the standings during this nine game home stretch; however, things haven’t quite gone how they expected. The good thing is they can still turn things around with six games remaining at Pepsi Center.

The Avs will begin a two-game series with the L.A. Kings this Friday a team just four games behind the Avs in the Western Division. Currently the Las Vegas Golden Knights hold the top spot in the Division followed by the St. Louis Blues, and the Phoenix Wild who now has a one-game lead over the Avs unless Colorado can muster a win at home Wednesday night.

Star player Nathan MacKinnon has now missed three games with a head injury, while Cale Makar has also been out with an upper body injury and isn’t expected to return anytime soon. With players like MacKinnon and Makar out, the Avs rotation has had to get creative and although the team has talent and depth, it cannot sustain the fan expectations with stars like MacKinnon and Makar out.

In other sports the Denver Nuggets have had a nice break since the start of All-Star weekend last Friday. Nikola Jokic played in Saturday’s All-Star game and although Jokic has been in talks for MVP of the 2021 season, it was the Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo who stole the show on Saturday with 35 points, 3 assists followed by Portland Trailblazers Damian Lillard who recorded 32 points. Giannis was named MVP of the 2021 NBA game as Team Lebron beat Team Durant 170-150.

The Nuggets return to the court this Friday in Memphis to face the Grizzlies at 6 p.m. The Grizzlies are coming off a close loss to the Bucks last Thursday and sit just three games behind the Nuggets in the Western Conference. From there the Nuggets are at home to host the Mavericks on Saturday night at 8 p.m. before starting off the new week at home against the Indiana Pacers on Monday at 7 p.m.

The Colorado Rockies have won four of eight in Spring Training losing the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 on Monday. This week the Rockies will face the Arizona Diamondbacks (not played at the time of this writing) on Tuesday, the San Diego Padres Wednesday at 1:10 p.m., the Chicago Cubs on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. and the San Francisco Giants on Friday at 1:05 p.m.

The Denver Broncos have placed the Franchise Tag on Justin Simmons solidifying his time with the Broncos another year until both sides can come to a long-term agreement. It’s still unclear as to what Denver plans to do at quarterback with rumors slowly dying down about the Broncos interest in Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Texans have reiterated that they have no plans of letting Watson go, but speculation suggests the top stat quarterback from 2020 is ready to sit out the entire season if the Texans refuse to trade the disgruntled quarterback.
