Radon information sessions

The City of Fort Collins, in partnership with the Larimer County Extension Office, invite residents of Larimer County to join a free virtual informational session next month to learn more about radon, how it can impact health, and actions that can be taken to mitigate radon in homes.

Radon gas enters homes and other buildings through cracks and openings in basements, crawl spaces, and slabs. Radon levels vary from house to house and have nothing to do with the age, upkeep, or quality of the building; however, Colorado homes are at a higher risk for radon.

Larimer County residents will also receive a FREE radon test kit for attending the webinar. Each session will have interpretation services in Spanish. To register for the virtual session visit

Sessions Dates:

Thursday, September 16, 2021, from 6-7 p.m.

Tuesday, September 21, 2021, from 12-1 p.m.

Denver expands rent assistance to struggling households

Denver’s Department of Housing Stability (HOST) has greatly expanded its capacity to provide federal rent assistance funds to households in need. Denver City Council last night approved the final in a series of contracts to administer the Emergency Rental Assistance program (ERAP) to Denver households that are unable to pay rent and utilities.

The contracts will play a role in stemming the tide of evictions, which are anticipated following the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to allow evictions to resume. Nearly one in eight Denver residents is behind on their rent, and many may receive an imminent notice to pay their rent or lose their homes.

A $3 million contract was approved with The Salvation Army. Other contracts recently approved include Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. ($5,000,000); Northeast Denver Housing Center ($6,000,000); Jewish Family Service of Colorado ($3,502,208); and The Community Firm ($4,177,531).

Our Government

White House

President Joseph R. Biden declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Louisiana and ordered Federal air to supplement State, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Ida beginning on August 26th and continuing. The President’s actions makes Federal funding available to affected individuals throughout Parishes in Louisiana.

Colorado Governor

Governor Polis sent a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senators Cory Booker and Ron Wyden urging Congress to immediately take up legislation to enact tax and banking measures for the marijuana industry as the U.S. government looks to legalize cannabis federally. Specifically, Governor Polis called on Congress to pass the SAFE Banking Act that would allow financial institutions to serve cannabis businesses.

Denver Mayor

Mayor Michael B. Hancock today announced the appointment of County Court Magistrate Judge Kelly Cherry to the Denver County Court bench. That appointment will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Adam Espinoza. “Our county court is a special institution responisble for overseeing the laws that have the most impact on our community and our residents, and in Magistrate Judge Cherry I found an indivudual whose values for diversity and equity will help elevate our local judicial systems, “Mayor Hancock said.
