Letter to the Editor:
The Board of Directors of the Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy and Research Organization (CLLARO) is in full support of the EPA Clean Power Plan – and we are perplexed by the recent news that Attorney General Cynthia Coffman is joining a lawsuit to challenge it. The Clean Power Plan is the single most important step our country can take to reduce carbon pollution in the fight against climate change.
Latinos have an alarmingly high rate of asthma and other health conditions caused or made worse by carbon emissions and pollution. The Clean Power Plan will cut carbon emissions by 32 percent by the year 2030. The health of the Latino community depends on this reduction – and we should look to Attorney General Coffman to protect our health, not harm it.
The CLLARO board recognizes that greenhouse emissions have led to global warming and climate change, which takes a disproportionately negative toll on the health and well-being of racial and ethnic minorities, especially in low income areas. We urge Attorney General Coffman to reconsider her position and support the Clean Power Plan as a major step in slowing the degradation of our air, health and environment.
