Whether you’re currently pregnant or a new mother, there’s much to learn and many health related decisions to make for not only yourself, but also for your baby. For instance, it’s important to learn the facts so you can know what foods to eat while you are pregnant, choose a method for delivery and potentially prepare for breastfeeding. In Colorado, expecting and new moms should also learn the facts about retail marijuana to make informed and educated decisions. For example, it is important to know that just because marijuana is legal in Colorado for adults 21 and older, it doesn’t mean it is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

Key marijuana facts for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers include:

• There is no known safe amount of marijuana to use while you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

• Whether it’s smoked or eaten, THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol – the chemical in marijuana that makes the person consuming it feel “high,” passes to your baby.

• Exposure to THC in the womb may affect your baby’s brain development, making it hard for them to pay attention and learn as they grow older.

• THC gets into your breast milk and passes through to your baby.

Whether you’re currently pregnant or a new mother, you should take the time to learn the facts about retail marijuana so you can make informed and educated decisions for yourself and for your baby.

All information on the health effects of marijuana comes from the Monitoring Health Concerns Related to Marijuana in Colorado: 2014 Report.
