10/04/2017
La Voz kicks off the 11th annual Student of the Week (SOTW) program and we are excited to once again feature Colorado’s top seniors for the 2017-2018 school year. Last year we had the privilege of featuring Colorado’s top students from statewide high schools.
Student of the Week is one of our most popular features and in recent years it has become one of our busiest times of the year, with an increase of student nominations each year. Last year our committee faced some difficulties narrowing down the list due to the quantity of nominations that came across our desks.
To give you a glimpse into the challenges we faced, here is a list of the of students we reviewed: Luis Gallegos was a senior at Thornton High School who held a 4.62 GPA, lettered in Academics all four years of high school, and was accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Amanda Tran from Ralston Valley High School who held a 4.0 GPA, and was awarded the National Hispanic Scholar and was accepted to Barrett Honors College at ASU; or Isabella Rios who graduated from Arvada West High School with a 4.5 GPA and is attending the Colorado School of Mines toward a chemical engineering degree.
We received nominations for an outstanding group of students who attended Colorado high schools. We challenge and encourage school administrators and teachers from across the state to send us nominations of your top students who deserve public praise and accolades. As the kickoff on October 11, 2017 quickly approaches we would like to remind everyone, including parents, please reach out to your student’s counselors, teachers, coaches etc. about your child and remind them why they need to nominate your amazing student.
Our first feature of this year’s program will begin next week and run through the end of May 2018, at which time the Student of the Week committee will choose one amazing student for our scholarship award of $1500. Once we have selected a winner, we will feature that outstanding student in a mid-June print edition and online through social media.
