Hundreds of doctors boycotting work in Kenya - Over 500 senior doctors in a popular Kenya hospital are boycotting their work after a doctor was suspended. The doctor allegedly performed brain surgery on the wrong patient. Three others medical staff were also suspended.

Listeria outbreak in South Africa Numerous South Africa states have banned processed meat after a listeria outbreak has made waves across the country. At least 180 people have died from food poisoning, and it has taken South Africa over a year to find the source of the outbreak. There have been over 900 cases of listeria poisoning in South Africa since the beginning of 2017, the largest listeria outbreak ever, according to the United Nations.


North Korea/South Korea meet - For the first time since he took office in 2011, North Korea leader Kim Jong-un hosted a dinner with senior South Korean delegates. Ten people met in Pyongyang to discuss restarting dialogue between North Korea and the United States. Among those who attened were South Korea intelligence chief Suh Hoon and National Security advisor Chung Eui-yong.

China announces military budget China has announced a $175 billion military budget, a number that marks an eight percent increase from last year. Other expected moves from the country include a removal of a two-term presidential limit. The removal of the presidential limit would make current Chinese President Xi Jinping the most powerful leader in China since Mao Zedong.


Seven detained over journalist’s death - Seven people have been detained in Slovakia for the death of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée. The two were found dead in Kuciak’s apartment. Those detained have alleged ties to an Italian organization group, and police detained them after raids in two different regions. Kuciak had reported on tax evasion and fraud by Slovakia businesses.

Star Trek Center opens in Sweden The world’s first Star Trek Center has been opened in Sweden. “Klingon Tourist Center,” has been opened in a small theatre, and it features things like a 3D replica of the First City, maps and brochures of the Star Trek planet and live performances of re-enactments from Star Trek.

Latin America

Mexican authorities arrested - Four Mexican authorities in Jalisco, Mexico are being investigated over three missing Italian men. Jalisco’s Governor stated that the Mexican authorities have confessed to handing the missing men to a criminal gang. Mexican officials are also on the hunt for three other authorities who are believed to have been connected to the missing Italian men.

Venezuelan presidential election pushed back - The National Electoral Council announced that Venezuela’s presidential election has been pushed back from April 22 to May 20. United Nation’s Chief Antonio Guterres will be invited to monitor the election process.

North America

Latin American artists win big at Oscars - The Oscars saw Latin American artists and films walk away with big awards. The biggest highlight might have been Mexican-born director Guillermo del Toro winning best picture and Best Director for “The Shape of Water.” With him receiving the award, three Mexican directors have now combined for four of the past five Best Directors awards from the Oscars.

Man shoots himself in front of White Hosue - Cameron Ross Burgress from Alabama went to a fence outside the White House and shot and killed himself. He didn’t shoot any rounds at the White House and he had no previous criminal history. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were in Florida at the time of the shooting.
