La Voz Bilingüe has named Antonio José Garcia as the 2017-2018 La Voz Student of the Week Scholarship recipient. Our 12-year old program continues to attract Colorado’s top students during their path to great success.
Garcia will be awarded a $1500 Scholarship from La Voz. Garcia recently graduated from East High School in Denver and will be attending New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mex. in the fall.
Aside from graduating with an outstanding GPA, Garcia has been involved in the community, i.e. Board of Directors for the Young African & Latino Leaders, Café Cultura Youth Council and part of the Latino Students United Club. Garcia was also a danzante (dancer) with Grupo de Danza Azteca Huitzilopochtli.
With a strong sense of community, Garcia offers, “Community involvement is important because it betters society & achieves not just equity but equality.” Additionally Garcia had this to add regarding what he would do to change the world, “I would break down the systematic forms of oppression that communities of color, face such as the school to prison pipeline.”
Garcia plans to pursue a major in social work at New Mexico State University. Garcia is a shining example of a well-rounded student whose combination of achieving high academics and involvement in community will guide his path to a bright future, a formula for becoming a well-rounded citizen.
Garcia is the son of Arnoldo Garcia and Angelita Mondragon. Garcia cites his hero as grandfather Jose Mondragon.
