The Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals, a must see

While the Colorado Rockies were in Arizona battling for second place in the division and the Broncos gearing up for training camp, Colorado residents got a chance to sit back and enjoy some drag-racing at Bandimere Speedway for the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals over the weekend. Although the event isn’t exclusive to just the residents of Colorado they certainly take advantage of the opportunity and show their support for NHRA’s longest running sponsored national event, dating back to 1977.

The Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals began on Friday with races throughout the weekend. If you’ve never been to Colorado’s legendary drag strip, Bandimere Speeday (a.k.a. Thunder Mountain), the Dodge/Mopar sponsored Mile-High NHRA Nationals are a must, especially if you live in Colorado, because quite honestly, there’s nothing like the smell of nitromethane fuel in the morning!

The event has things for the entire family, and who doesn’t like cars that go over 300 miles per hour in 1320 feet? While many local teams competed, there were many more from across the country who traveled to the Mile High to compete in one of Colorado’s longest living pastimes.

This event isn’t just for the boys, as top-fuel favorite and NHRA top-fuel champion Brittany Force was there to compete and win, but was edged out by newcomer Jim Maroney who took home his first career win in the top-fuel category with a 3.824 second time and a top speed of 327.59 mph.

John Force, Brittany’s father won the Funny-Car round with a 4.089 second run notching his 1,300th career round win.

At the Manufacturers Midway, fans were able to check out the Dodge display in Nitro Alley each day of the races. Some of the 2018 Dodge lineup of vehicles on display included: Dodge Durango R/T, Dodge Challenger R/T 392 Scat Pack Shaker, Dodge Charger R/T 392 Scat Pack, Dodge Charger Hellcat and Dodge Viper GTC TA 1.0. At the tent, fans also had a chance to enter the ‘Drag Strip Showdown’ contest, running from July 19 to November 11, allowing fans to go head-to head in races on Dodge Simulators. Four winners chosen will gain entry into an official Drag Racing School with Mopar Dodge Top Fuel driver Leah Pritchett and Mopar Dodge Charger Funny Car driver Matt Hagan for a final competition in the 840-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Demon!

Nationals isn’t the only must see event running at Bandimere this year, for a complete list of up-coming racing and events visit

In other sports the Colorado Rockies nearly swept the Arizona Diamondbacks for a secured spot at second in the division. Unfortunately Arizona salvaged their spot at number two by beating the Rockies 6-1 on Sunday night in Arizona. The Rockies have the Houston Astros this week along with the Oakland Athletics at home before heading to St. Louis to face the Cardinals next week. The Rockies are still within reach of first in the tightest division in baseball only 2.5 games behind the L.A. Dodgers and a single game behind the Diamondbacks.

The Denver Broncos begin training camp this week and fans will to get their first look at quarterback Case Keenum. We are only two weeks and some change away from the Broncos first pre-season game against the Minnesota Vikings. Football has arrived and there’s not a happier fan-base in America than Broncos Country.
