Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) announced a $60,000 gift from United Airlines, which includes $30,000 in travel certificates, to provide access and opportunities to Denver’s underserved youth at a critical stage in their lives.
“At Mile High Youth Corps, we provide the support and skills to help young people grow into self-sustaining community leaders reaching potentials they never thought possible – all while helping leave a long-lasting impact on the environment and surrounding community,” said Brigid McRaith, CEO of Mile High Youth Corps. “United’s investment will go a long way in ensuring our youth have the tools and resources to successfully transition into adulthood.”
Resting on a career pathways model, based in principles of empowerment and leadership, youth, called Corpsmembers, are employed and trained to serve on community-based projects, earn a paycheck, an AmeriCorps education award, and industry certifications. They receive wrap-around services and for those that need them, high school equivalency classes are offered. MHYC programs provide youth the opportunity to develop not only workforce skills, but build an ethos of service to community, ultimately making positive change in their lives, in their communities, and for the environment.
To date, Mile High Youth Corps has served 3,700 Corpsmembers, provided $3.5 million in AmeriCorps education awards, and delivered 1.2 million hours of service. Corpsmembers have built or maintained more than 220 miles of trail, helped build over 950 affordable housing units, and retrofitted 40,000 low-income homes for energy and water savings.
“United Airlines is proud to work with organizations like Mile High Youth Corps who have a proven track record of engaging young people in service to their communities and stewardship of their environment while cultivating valuable work skills to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” said Suzi Cabo, Managing Director, Corporate & Community Affairs.
About Mile High Youth Corps
Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization established in 1992 to give youth ages 16 to 24 a chance to earn an income and learn hands-on job skills while serving in their communities. In its first year, 20 youth served Denver neighborhoods through a single 10-week program. Today, MHYC engages more than 200 youth every year through several comprehensive programs that integrate paid work experience on community service projects with leadership development, career and college exploration, and education. During its 26 year history, Mile High Youth Corps has grown from a small, seasonal, neighborhood-based organization to a comprehensive, year-round, regional program serving 22 counties from two regional offices in Metro Denver and the Southern Front Range of Colorado.
