Zambia fisherman killed by crocodile
A 52-year-old man was attacked and killed by a crocodile while trying to escape a herd of elephants. Dean Nyirenda was attacked after diving into a stream near the Luangwa River to escape the elephants. Authorities in Zambia said they are considering new laws to reduce human-animal interactions.
Nigeria court rules over 1949 killing of miners
A court in Nigeria has ordered the British government to pay $27 million to each of the families of 21 miners who were killed in 1949 by the British administration. The miners were killed when colonial police opened fire on them as they were striking for better conditions. Families and others in Nigeria have long advocated for official acknowledgment and compensation.

Dozens killed at Pakistan mosque
At least 31 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a device at a mosque. The incident occurred during Friday prayers in Pakistan. Around 169 others were injured, and the Balochistan Liberation Army rebel group said it was behind the attack. Pakistan’s military said it killed more than 200 militants in response.
Journalists detained in China
A rights group said two Chinese investigative journalists were detained after they reported corruption by a senior official. The journalists, Liu Hu and Wu Yingjiao, are under investigation for “making false accusations” and “illegal business operations.” China has arrested and prosecuted journalists in the past, detaining at least 120 reporters in recent years.

Russian general shot
Lt. General Vladimir Alexeyev, a high-profile Russian general, was shot multiple times and wounded. The incident occurred in Moscow, and his condition is unknown. He is number two in the main directorate of Russia’s GRU military intelligence. Local reports read that the gunman fled and investigators are searching CCTV footage for clues.
Cyber-attacks target Winter Olympics
Authorities in Italy said the country stopped “Russian origin” cyber-attacks that were targeting the Winter Olympics. Among the websites the cyber-attacks targeted include hotels in host town Cortina d’Ampezzo and foreign ministry facilities. Russia is excluded from the Olympics and Winter Olympics, but Russian athletes can compete as neutrals.

Bus overturns in Brazil
A bus carrying about 60 people who were returning from a pilgrimage crashed in Brazil, leaving 15 people dead. The crash occurred on a curved stretch of a highway. Among those who died include three children. Numerous passengers were transported to a hospital, including a nine-year-old child who suffered a head injury.
Colombia president visits White House
Colombia President Gustavo Petro visited the White House to meet with President Donald Trump. The leaders discussed possibly exporting Venezuelan gas through Colombia and fighting drug trafficking. In the past, Trump called Petro a “sick man,” and Petro recently criticized Trump’s immigration policy and compared it to Nazis. Following their meeting, Trump described Petro as “terrific.”

Doctors warn about drinking raw milk after New Mexico baby dies
Doctors are urging people to not consume raw, unpasteurized milk after a baby died from a listeria infection in New Mexico. Officials believe the infection came from the baby’s mother, who drank raw milk during her pregnancy. Experts warned that drinking raw milk may have pathogens, like bird flu, tuberculosis, E. coli, and more.
Toronto police officers arrested
At least seven Toronto police officers were arrested because of allegations of drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit murder. An investigation found that in 2025, some of those officers allegedly attempted to kill a prison official at his home. The investigation also led to the discovery that officers were allegedly trafficking fentanyl and cannabis. More than 400 officers were involved in the investigation.
