The thirty-nine-year-old Argentine scored two goals in Mondays matchup giving him five goals in the tournament so far and a new all-time record of eighteen across total World Cup goals. The virtuoso adds another accolade to his resume as he and the rest of the Argentinian team continue to work towards the World Cup.
Two young talents however trail behind Messi in this tournament, tied for number two, Norway’s noteworthy Erling Haaland and France’s phenom Kylian Mbappé have scored for a total of four each, trailing Messi for that number one spot.
In other World Cup news, Portugal’s prestigious Cristiano Ronaldo finally joins the scoring column after facing harsh scrutiny by fans and observers. The forty-one-year-old scored in Portugal’s match against Uzbekistan on June 23rd setting the tone for Portugal’s masterclass. The seasoned striker finished the outing with two goals, not allowing his lackluster performance against DR Congo to shake his motivation.
In local news, the Colorado Rockies are currently 1-1 in a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Monday night brought us a triumphant comeback at Coors Field as the Rockies, down 2-0 bottom of the ninth managed to edge out three runs to slam the gavel down and declare victory. Jake MacCarthy played judge, jury and executioner Monday night as he slammed an in-field home run with the bases loaded to call the game in what fans are dubbing a “rare” and “historic” victory in a walk-off triple in-field hit.
Unfortunately, Tuesday’s game did not carry over the momentum, as the Rockies lost 5-2. Wednesday brings us the last game in the series where the Rockies can potentially utilize Monday night’s electricity to rally together another win to mark their eighth series win of the season and to tie last year’s series wins.
Tuesday night brought us the first round of the NBA draft and with that the Denver Nuggets made some moves in hopes to strengthen their future roster. While the Nuggets did have a 26th overall pick, their front office decided to trade down and expand their current reserve of picks giving up their 26th pick to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for the 35th overall pick in this year’s draft, along with two future second round picks. With that traded pick the Spurs selected Tarris Reed. While some are questioning the decision to trade down and out into the future, Denver sports fans can remain hopeful for the future of the organization and the 2026-2027 season.
Also, a blockbuster unofficial trade occurred June 22nd as the Milwaukee Bucks have decided to send off Superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal to the Miami Heat. The superstar had spent his last thirteen years in the league with Milwaukee, and many Bucks fans are devastated.
This trade brings light to Milwaukee’s future, as a franchise in hopes of accelerating a rebuild and redefined their presence within the league, while the Heat invest in bringing more star power to help the likes of Bam Adebayo and company.
