Uganda suspends school trips after deadly crash 

After a bush crash killed 20 students in Uganda, officials announced the country is suspending all school trips. Early investigations suggest the bus had a mechanical fault. The crash is one of Uganda’s deadliest involving children in recent times. 

Ghana TikToker jailed for false news 

Camilla Alhassan, a Ghanaian TikToker, has been sentenced to a year in prison after sharing a series of videos alleging misconduct by President John Mahama. The videos allege, without evidence, that Mahama sacrificed 32 cows in a ritual to win the 2024 general election. Last year, another influencer, David Kwodwo Prah Afful, was sentenced to prison after he threatened to kill Mahama and other government officials. 

Asia 

New Zealand actor known for role in Jurassic Park passes 

Sam Neill, known for his roles in Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders, has passed. He was 78 years old, and died “sudden and unexpected,” according to his family. Neill grew up in New Zealand and will be honored with a private family memorial at his farm in the country at an undetermined date. 

Chinese food delivery driver wins top literary honor 

Wang Jibing, a food delivery driver in China, won the Lu Xun Literary Prize, one of China’s top literary honors. He wrote a collection of poems and essays about everyday challenges delivery riders face. Some of those stories were written on slips of paper between deliveries. Through the prize, Wang will receive a monetary award. 

Europe 

Spain wins World Cup 

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 over the weekend in the 2026 Men’s World Cup final. Over the 2026 World Cup, Spain allowed one goal, the fewest conceded by any winning team. Spain is the first nation to win both the men’s and women’s World Cups concurrently. 

Deadly Ukraine strikes hit Russia

At least eight people were killed and 62 injured when Ukrainian drones struck two warehouses. The buildings belonged to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks struck facilities that were used to supply sanctioned components for drone production and navigation equipment. 

Latin America 

Earthquake strikes off Mexico coast 

A 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of southern Mexico last week. No significant damage or fatalities were reported in Mexico or Guatemala. Authorities advised residents to stay awa from beaches because of possible tsunami waves. Aftershocks with magnitudes between 4.7 and 6 were also recorded. 

Ferry capsizes off coast of Guyana 

Officials fear that dozens of people drowned after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Guyana. Around 67 people were rescued, but officials have been unable to locate more survivors. The ferry’s passenger list said it was carrying 116 passengers and 17 crew members, but officials warned the list is not accurate. 

North America 

JD Vance welcomes fourth child 

Vice President JD Vance announced the birth of his fourth child. Alec Neel Vance was born over the weekend. Vance said his wife Usha Vance is healthy and thanked military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center. This marks the first time a baby has been born to a sitting vice-president while in office for more than 150 years. 

Taco Bell removes lettuce from menu because of parasite 

Taco Bell is removing lettuce from its menus in some states because it may be linked to an outbreak of diarrhea caused by a parasite. The fast-food chain said it made the decision as a precaution. Around 1,645 people in five states exposed to Taco Bell have been infected with the parasite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
