Sudan drone strike kills 35
At least 35 people were killed by a drone strike from the Sudanese army during a court session. The attack occurred in an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and Sudan’s army has yet to comment on the incident. Among those who were killed include four tribal leaders and two (RSF) commanders.
Hundreds flee Tigray region
Fighting between regional forces and the Ethiopian army caused hundreds of Ethiopians to leave the Tigray region for Sudan. Over the weekend, clashes broke out between the sides in one of the most violent encounters since the end of the country’s civil war four years ago. Officials said the violence included heavy artillery and drones.

Indonesia ferry catches fire
An Indonesian ferry carrying around 250 people caught fire while at sea, killing at least five people. Officials said 41 others are still missing. Images showed passengers in life jackets on a lifeboat while other clips showed people climbing down from the ferry. It is unknown how the ferry caught fire.
Dozens die in Japan earthquake
At least 34 people were killed in Japan after an earthquake hit the southwestern part of the country. The incident occurred last week and caused widespread damage to houses and power lines. At least 30,000 people lost their power, and around 9,000 others were transferred to evacuation centers. Officials recorded more than 100 aftershocks after the initial quake.

Ukraine hits major Russia oil refinery
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strike hit a major oil refinery and an airfield that houses Russia’s strategic aviation in a series of strikes. Russia said eight people are dead and confirmed a strike on the online retailer Wildberries warehouse. In Ukraine, Russia has recently targeted warehouses of the country’s postal company and major online retailers.
Bomb detonated at Russia restaurant
A handmade explosive device killed at least three people and injured 21 others at an Italian restaurant in Moscow. The incident occurred during a private function when a woman carrying the explosives tried to enter the restaurant and was stopped by security. The device then detonated, killing the woman, a guard, and a restaurant visitor. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the attack was “a cruel act of terror which took human lives.”

Brazil denies US government officials visas
Brazil denied visas for two US state department officials, accusing them of trying to interfere in the country’s upcoming election. Officials were set to visit the country for freedom of expression and religion, and election integrity. Brazil’s presidential election is set to take place in October. The United States denied accusations that it is trying to undermine Brazil’s elections.
Tourist plane crashes in Peru, kills 13
A plane carrying tourists in Peru crashed and killed all 13 people on board. The craft was flying over the Nazca Lines archaeological site, and the cause of the crash is unknown. The Nazca Lines is a popular destination, and tourists fly in small planes to see ancient drawings of animals in desert sand.

Washington wildfire forces tens of thousands to evacuate homes
Around 60,000 people in Washington were forced to evacuate because of wildfires. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed, and thousands of people were left without power. Human-induced climate change makes warm, dry conditions more likely, which causes wildfires, more frequent and intense heatwaves, and potential summer droughts.
The Sopranos actor passes
Vincent Pastore, known for playing Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in the TV show The Sopranos, has passed at age 80. He was found dead in his New York City home, and criminality is not suspected. Pastore was born in 1946 and served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War before his acting career. He also appeared in movies like Goodfellas and Carlito’s Way.
