Two Nigerian citizens were killed in South Africa on June 28 by police officers, according to Nigerian officials. Authorities allege that the victims were killed “at a time when foreigners are being unduly targeted.” Nigeria alleges the killings were a result of a rise in anti-migrant sentiment in South Africa.

Ghana men’s soccer coach Carlos Quieroz is stepping down after the country was eliminated from the World Cup in the last 32. The team lost to Colombia 1-0 in the first round of the knockouts. Queiroz said in a statement that the team brought back respect and credibility for Ghana players on soccer’s biggest stage.

Deadly prison riots in Sri Lanka
Two days of violence at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka has resulted in at least 25 killings and hundreds of injuries. Among the victims included four guards. The violence was allegedly triggered because an inmate informed authorities about a drug trafficking operation in the prison. Officials are taking steps to transfer inmates to other prisons.
China tests missile in Pacific
Following a new defense pact between Australia and Fiji, China tested a long-range missile with a dummy warhead into the Pacific Ocean. Officials said the test was a routine part of China’s annual military program. In recent years, Australia has worked to strengthen relations with Pacific neighbors in an effort to counter Chinese influence and military expansion.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country struck a major oil terminal in St Petersburg. He said the oil terminal is a key infrastructure that “generates revenue for Russia’s war.” Officials from St Petersburg confirmed that the city had been under a drone attack but said there were no casualties.
Thousands evacuated in France because of wildfire
At least 10,000 people were ordered to evacuate in southern France because a wildfire. The country has recently dealt with a strong heatwave. The fire has burned at least 11,366 acres. Climate change is increasing temperatures all throughout the world, but Europe has heated up twice as fast as the global average.

Earthquake survivor pulled out alive after eight days
Officials in Venezuela rescued a man who had been trapped for eight days in the rubble of a building after two earthquakes. Authorities rescued the man more than 100 hours after he was first found under the rubble. As of July 2, 2,595 people have died from the earthquakes that hit Venezuela on June 24.
Peru elects new president
Peru has elected right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori as its next president. It was the fourth time she sought office. Fujimori is the daughter of disgraced former President Alberto Fujimori. She promised to oversee a crackdown on organized crime and said she would assume the role of president with responsibility, humility, and a sense of duty.

Plane hit by fireworks in Chicago
A plane carrying 52 passengers and six crew members was hit by fireworks while landing in Chicago. The flight managed to land safely, and no injuries were reported. Police said the fireworks caused minor paint damage, and no other damage was found. Authorities reported the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration.
US withdraws troops from Nigeria
The United States has withdrawn most troops from Nigeria following a joint operation that began in December. The two countries carried out strikes against militants on Christmas day and deployed 200 soldiers two months later. During the mission, Islamic State leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was killed.
